subject unaware

See this face?

It's the same as this face

Only aged 4 more years.

I love to take pictures of this kid when he's sleeping

He's so calm, so serene....

I wonder how long I can get away with it before it becomes just creepy

A mom is born

I remember my first Mother's day. I wasn't quite a mother yet....being that my baby was still inside my body. It was six days before my due date, and I was hoping that he/she would come bless me on Mother's day. That didn't happen. She hung in there for 2 more weeks, but my day was still memorable. My mom and my sister bought me Mother's day cards, and some cozy pajamas to wear at the hospital. I was very touched because I hadn't really done any "mothering" yet, other than suffer the 9 months of pregnancy.....and I switched from spending my movie theater paychecks on clothes for myself to spending it all on baby stuff.
But I digress. It is to date one of my most memorable Mother's Days. It was almost like an initiation, welcome to the club, you're a mom now, and will forever be. It meant a lot. I was only 18, and a little insecure. Should my becoming a mother at this junction in my life be celebrated? Some wouldn't think so, but my family, my mother, made sure it was. I know now that it was one of the millions of decisions she's had to make as a mother, to celebrate rather than condemn. She could have been disappointed, but she didn't reveal it to me. Instead I was supported and made to feel capable and confident in my future as a mom, and it's one of the best things my mother has done for me.

10 years later, being a mother is a lot less whimsical, and a lot more "down in the trenches" (Cali is potty training), but it's no less poignant. What we do as mothers is create life, perpetuate the human race, raise up the next generation and hope that we've learned enough by that point to do it well, to point them in the right directions, send them out in the world and hope for their happiness.

Mistakes are inevitable in a position so all encompassing and neverending, and gratitude may scarcely be spoken, but the connection of mother to child, and the love is always there, and reward enough to continue to do our very best.

To the rest of the girls in the club, Happy Mother's Day.

This is what my kids and hubby put together for me

Just enough recognition to make it through another year, *wink*

blahhh- g

Everyone in my house is sick except me. They're a big group of coughing, sniffling, nose blowing lunatics, and I am exhausted. I am so so eternally grateful that it's Friday, but I really wish it was actually Saturday. Yesterday afternoon I picked up the older kids and took Damien home. I was just about to head out to take Emily to gymnastics when I got roped into bringing Caliana with me. I think her and daddy choreographed it before I got there.
So, it's hot, and I'm already cranky anticipating 2 hours at the gym with a half sick two year old, so I decide to run through Arby's for some curly fries and a diet dr pepper because grease and caffeine always makes life better. Except I get into the drive thru and they have a sign up that says their credit card machine is broken and I only have like a dollar and some change on me, so I cussed a lot, and only got the drink. Cali slept, and sweated on me for the first hour and a half of Emily's practice and whined for the last half hour.

This morning is not going much better. I'm not sick per se, but I think I'm getting worn down anyways. My nerves are definitely shot. Patrick is sick, and it goes a little something like this...."cough, cough, hack, haaaaackkkk, spit, sniff, cough, spit, groan....." and it makes me want to rip my ears off. I stomped around my room trying in vain to find something, anything to wear. I wanted desperately to just wear my sweats, but that's a little too casual, even for Friday. Someone put Patrick's pants away in my drawer, I couldn't find the shirt I was looking for, then I couldn't find the pants I was looking for, then I couldn't open the closet because someone put a damn chair in there! So I move the chair and then I still can't open it because the freakin door fell off the freakin track and I just sat on the floor and cried. Ok, not really, but I was close. Thiiiiiiis close.
I finally found something to put on, and went downstairs to usher the kids through their morning. 20 exhausting minutes later I discover that Cali has smeared peanut butter all over the front of me. I flip out and run around looking for the diaper wipes while my poor sick husband is going "cough, I'm sorry baby, hack, spit, groan"

Finally we get out the door and the kids haven't eaten yet since we're out of milk and we're out of cereal and we're out of everything and I can't find 2 minutes to get to the store, so they get good old Mickey-d's sausage mcmuffins.
I drop Cali off first and when I come back outside, I find my son sitting on the roof of my car playing his harmonica. It's funny, it's random, but all it does is ratchet my impatience up a couple more notches, and I'm tempted to drive off before he can scramble back inside.
We get to the school and I'm like "Get out, get out, get out" except oh no! Emily has a field trip today and she forgot her permission slip and now she's not going to get to go, wahhhhhhhh. Emily, go see if you class is open, and get one!
"it never is, wahhhhhh"
Except today it is, and I sign her permission slip, with a highlighter, and then on the way to work, I discovered a 12 inch hole in my beautiful silk shirt, so I'm now wearing jeans and a black tank top. I should have just worn the sweats. But, I got my cup of coffee for free, and now I'm at work, and I just.might.make.it.through.the.day.

Baby J

I became a mom 8 years before my best friend. Those of you that are parents know that staying friends with your pre-baby friends, when you have a baby and they don't....isn't always easy. In fact I had 3 kids by the time Jen had her first. Not that I can blame her, it's not like she waited a real long time....I just started early.
2 years ago she had a beautiful baby girl. Jasmin Michele (the Michele part is after me *proud grin*). I was thrilled for Jen to join me in the mommy universe, and our baby girls are less than a year apart.

Yesterday, Jen and her husband Justin welcomed their second baby....a boy this time. Jayden Kirchner was born at 4:04 pm, on the 4th, weighing 7lbs, 4 oz. Looks like 4 is his lucky number!

I stayed up until almost 1-o-clock last night, and my hands are cramping like crazy, but I finished his blankie! Talk about a procrastinator. In my defense though, he was more than 2 weeks early.

Is it just me, or did it turn out a little navajo-ish?

I spent a few hours with my new nephew this morning and now I'm all baby-head-smell-drunk, and daydreaming about tiny fingernails and wrinkly satin baby skin.

Congratulations you guys!

No rest for the weary

I can't decide which is more tiring, the work week, or the weekend. No doubt my life is more scheduled during the week. Every day it's work, pick up kids, dinner, baths, etc.... and on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, I'm taking kids to gymnastics, and Tuesday I have dance. Whew.

But on the weekend is when I have to cram in everything else. Grocery shopping, bathroom cleaning, quality family time, church, projects, relaxing!!!
Friday night I had 7 kids instead of 3. My 12 year old brother spends the night almost every Friday, and this week we also babysat Emily and Damien's 3 cousins. All boys, ages 6, 8, and 10.
I then spent the rest of the weekend cleaning. Thank god it rained all weekend or I would have fled my house and it would still look a tornado hit it. Or an earthquake, since this is California and we don't get tornadoes.

And then I stayed up until 1:30 last night working on a baby blanket for my new nephew because he's due in 2 weeks, except damn, her water just broke this morning! Just my luck. I'm sure I'll have pictures tomorrow.

hypochondri-nation

All is not right in my world today. It's Friday, it's the first day of May, and it's raining.
Not cool, not cool at all.

Every day I have a rather large cup of coffee for breakfast. Nothing else, just coffee, and then my stomach starts rebelling and cramping and owwwwww, and someone says "maybe you should eat something" and I know, totally, right? Except my stomach feels horrible and eating something, anything, sounds so, ick!
But then eventually I do, and then I feel better, and I'm all like "duh", but then then next day I do it again, because I'm stubborn.

And lately my belly had been all weird anyways, and I feel nauseous, and then I freak out with the whole "what if I'm pregnant?" even though I have a bulletproof, "nothing is growing in this uterus while I'm living here" IUD. But then I do the woman panic thing where I'm all "yeah, but what if there's a baby growing in my fillopian tube, because IUD's totally don't prevent ectopic pregnancy, and that's probably why I'm so bloated, and I even felt like a couple tiny flutters, although it's totally just gas bubbles or something. But yeah, I have enough irrational freak outs without adding pig pandemic panic.
But since everyone else is talking about it, might as well.
Damien has a cough and a runny nose right now, and Emily's teacher prints out a whole fact sheet on Swine Flu and gives it to him, so now Emily is freaking out, thinking he's dying, and Damien comes walking in like "don't touch me, stay away, I have THE DISEASE"
This is why I send my kids to school, so they can learn to be hypochondriacs. They can't learn it from me, I keep my neurosis well hidden.
